Benghazi, Libya's second city, is a Mediterranean port of around 800,000 people with 2,500 years of history — founded as the Greek colony Euesperides, it became the eastern capital of kingdoms and, in the 19th century, the heartland of the Senussi Sufi order whose lodges spread Islamic learning across Cyrenaica. The city's Italian-era boulevards, Ottoman mosques and the corniche along the harbour tell its layered story.

Benghazi's mosques — from the historic Ottoman-era masjids of the old town to the modern mosques of the suburbs — serve a devout population where Friday Jummah is the week's social anchor. At 32.1°N, Benghazi's seasons are Mediterranean: summer Fajr near 4:00 AM with Maghrib near 8:00 PM, winter Fajr around 6:05 AM with Maghrib near 5:35 PM. The sea moderates the heat, and evening prayers at the corniche mosques come with a Mediterranean breeze. During Ramadan, Benghazi's old markets sell dates from the southern oases, and the iftar tables feature bazeen — the traditional Libyan barley-flour dish — alongside soups and the sweet asida. Jumhuriya Street and the 23 July Lake waterfront are Benghazi's social heart, its university — founded in 1955 — was Libya's first, and the nearby Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) supplies the city's markets with honey and olives.
