Hat Yai, in Thailand's far south, is a bustling commercial city of around 800,000 people (in the metro area) near the Malaysian border — and the de facto capital of the country's Malay-Muslim south. Unlike Buddhist-majority central Thailand, the deep south is predominantly Muslim, and Hat Yai's markets, mosques and halal restaurants reflect a culture shared with neighbouring Kelantan across the border.

The nearby Central Mosque of Songkhla — nicknamed the 'Taj Mahal of Thailand' for its white domes mirrored in a reflecting pool — is the region's Islamic showpiece, while Hat Yai's own mosques serve traders from the Kim Yong Market and students of the Prince of Songkla University. The city's prayer rhythm follows the southern Thai pattern: at 7°N, Fajr falls near 5:00 AM and Maghrib just after 6:20 PM, steady year-round, with the monsoon (October–December) bringing heavy afternoon rains that often coincide with Asr.
