Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria, is one of Africa's largest indigenous cities — a sprawling metropolis of over 3.5 million people built across seven hills. Founded as a 19th-century Yoruba war camp, it became a colonial administrative centre and is now home to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria's oldest university, and the Cocoa House, once West Africa's tallest building.

Ibadan's religious landscape is mixed: large Muslim and Christian communities live side by side, and the city's central mosques — including the historic Ibadan Central Mosque — serve Yoruba Muslim families whose Islamic heritage stretches back centuries through trans-Saharan trade. Friday Jummah prayers see the city centre fill, while Sunday church services do the same two days later — a rhythm of coexistence locals are proud of. At 7.4°N, Ibadan's prayer times are steady year-round: Fajr near 5:15 AM, Dhuhr around 12:30 PM, Maghrib just after 6:30 PM. During Ramadan, the Bodija and Dugbe markets stay open late selling ofada rice, amala and fried plantain for iftar, and the city's famous amala joints do brisk pre-dawn business. The city's skyline of rust-brown rooftops, best seen from Mapo Hall on Mapo Hill, is one of the most recognisable urban views in West Africa.
