Johor Bahru — JB — is Malaysia's southern gateway, a booming city of around 1.8 million people (over 2 million in the metro area) staring across the Straits of Johor at Singapore. Linked to the island republic by two causeways, JB is a city of shopping malls, Legoland, and some of Malaysia's best-value food — and the capital of Johor state, whose sultan's Istana Besar palace overlooks the strait.

The Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque, completed in 1900 in a striking Victorian-Moorish style — its minarets resemble British clock towers — sits on a hill with views across to Singapore. JB's prayer life reflects its cross-border character: thousands of Malaysians commute daily to Singapore and time their prayers around the causeway queues, while the city's own mosques and suraus serve its Malay-Muslim majority. At 1.5°N, essentially on the equator, prayer times are almost perfectly stable: Fajr near 5:55 AM, Dhuhr around 1:10 PM, Maghrib just after 7:05 PM, every single day of the year. During Ramadan, JB's famous bazaars — especially the long Ramadan bazaar at Taman Suria — sell air katira, murtabak and Johor laksa to crowds that include day-trippers from Singapore.
