Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, is a colonial-era capital of over 5 million people where the golden Shwedagon Pagoda dominates the skyline — but the city's Muslim heritage is older than most visitors realise. Bengali, Chinese and Burmese Muslim traders have lived in downtown Yangon for centuries; the Bengali Sunni Jameh Mosque on Merchant Street and the Surti mosques of the Indian quarter have served them since the 1800s.

Yangon's Muslims — around 4% of the city — are woven into its commercial fabric: the Indian quarter's halal biryani shops, the Mogul Street eateries, and the mosques that fill for Friday Jummah alongside the Buddhist majority's pagoda festivals. At 16.8°N, Yangon's prayer times shift with the monsoon: the rains (June–October) bring dramatic dawn thunderstorms, with June Fajr near 4:25 AM, while the cool season (November–February) offers clear, pleasant dawns with Fajr around 5:15 AM. Maghrib ranges from about 6:00 PM in winter to 6:40 PM in summer. During Ramadan, downtown Yangon's 27th Street and the Indian quarter host the city's iftar markets — samosas, falooda and the famous Burmese-Muslim biryani drawing crowds of all faiths. The circular train loop around the city is a beloved slow-travel experience, passing monasteries, markets and the everyday life of the suburbs.
