Bamako, the capital of Mali, is a fast-growing Niger River city of over 4 million people — one of Africa's fastest-urbanising capitals. The river defines life here: pirogue canoes ferry commuters, the fishermen of Bozo cast nets at dawn, and the city's bridges link the old quarters to the expanding suburbs. Bamako's music scene is legendary — the city that produced Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté still fills nightclubs with desert blues and kora music.

The Grand Mosque of Bamako, built in the 1970s with a striking tall minaret, hosts the city's largest Eid prayers, while the older neighbourhood mosques of the historic quarters serve daily worshippers.
