Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is Africa's westernmost capital — a vibrant Atlantic peninsula city of over 4 million people where French, Wolof and Sufi traditions blend. During Ramadan, Dakar's night markets serve thiéboudienne (the national fish-and-rice dish) and yassa at iftar, and the corniche fills with families after Taraweeh. The Île de Gorée, a short ferry ride away, is a UNESCO site and a poignant memorial to the transatlantic slave trade.
