Kaduna, the former capital of Nigeria's Northern Region, is a major northern city of around 1.5 million people on the Kaduna River. Planned by the British as an administrative centre, it grew into an industrial and educational hub — nearby Zaria hosts Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria's largest university, and the city has long been a centre of Islamic scholarship in the north.

Kaduna's mosques range from the grand Sultan Bello Mosque to neighbourhood masjids in the Tudun Wada and Kawo districts. The city has seen religious tensions in the past, but daily life for most residents revolves around work, markets and the five prayers — the call to prayer from the city's minarets is a constant presence. At 10.5°N on the Sahel's edge, Kaduna's seasons are marked by the harmattan dust haze of December–February, when dawns are cool and Fajr falls around 5:25 AM, and the intense heat of April–May before the rains. Maghrib stays close to 6:30 PM throughout the year. During Ramadan, the city's suya spots and kunu sellers line the roads after Taraweeh, and the night markets of the old township stay busy until sahur. The annual Kaduna International Trade Fair and the city's textile markets keep its long commercial tradition alive.
