Mombasa, Kenya's great port city, is the historic heart of the Swahili coast — a city of around 1.5 million people on a coral island where African, Arab, Persian and Indian cultures have fused for a thousand years. The Old Town's carved wooden doors and narrow lanes, Fort Jesus's Portuguese-Omani walls, and the dhow harbour tell the story of the Indian Ocean trade that made Swahili civilisation.

Mombasa's Muslim community — roughly half the city, predominantly Swahili — centres on the Old Town's historic mosques, including the 16th-century Mandhry Mosque with its coral-stone minaret. The call to prayer here blends with the taarab music drifting from the cafes, and the Old Port's dhows still sail with the monsoon winds as they have for centuries. At 4°S, essentially on the equator, Mombasa's prayer times are perfectly stable: Fajr near 5:10 AM, Dhuhr around 12:30 PM, Maghrib just after 6:30 PM, all year. During Ramadan, the Old Town's Mackinnon Market area becomes a night food festival — madafu (coconut), mbaazi (pigeon peas in coconut), and the famous Swahili biryani draw crowds long after Taraweeh. The city's famous elephant tusks on Moi Avenue — built for a 1952 royal visit — remain Mombasa's most photographed landmark.
